We were taught algebra and Shakespeare… but not how to budget, save, or feel confident with money.
For many women, especially those navigating emotional stress or controlling relationships, money can feel overwhelming or even out of reach. But it’s not your fault. The system didn’t set us up to succeed.
This post is for the woman who:
- Feels behind because she never learned how money works
- Avoids checking her bank account because of anxiety
- Thinks financial freedom is “not for people like her”
- Buys things to feel better, then feels worse after
- Spends impulsively and wonders, “Why can’t I just stop?”
Let’s change that, one step at a time.
What is Money, Really?
Money isn’t just coins or numbers on a screen. It’s a tool, a form of power, and sometimes, a source of fear. But when you understand it, even just the basics, that fear starts to shrink.
4 Simple Money Basics They Should’ve Taught Us:
1. Income – Know what’s coming in.
You don’t need a job in finance. Just know:
“How much do I receive each week or month?”
2. Expenses – Know what’s going out.
Track rent, groceries, subscriptions, anything regular.
Even writing it in your Notes app is a great start.
3. Needs vs Wants
If it helps you survive, it’s a need. If it’s for comfort or fun, it’s a want. You deserve both, but learning the difference helps you stay in control.
4. Saving (even a little)
Saving isn’t about how much. It’s about consistency.
Start with £1 or £5 a week. You’re building a habit, not a fortune overnight.
Remember This:
You are not “bad with money.”
You were just never taught.
And now, you’re teaching yourself and that’s brave.
Next Step:
In the next post, we’ll explore why we spend emotionally, even when we know better.
